  1. History

El Palace Barcelona first opened its doors in 1919 as the Ritz of Barcelona and Barcelona’s first five-star luxury hotel. The hotel’s construction was initiated by Catalan politician and statesman Francesc Cambó, a regular guest of the Ritz Hotel in Madrid. The International Exhibition of Barcelona inspired a number of prominent Catalan personalities, including Cambó, to promote the construction of an international hotel. Although César Ritz was somewhat reticent at the beginning, as he only chose large European capitals as locations for his hotels, he agreed to build what would be and continues to be one of the most popular hotels in Barcelona, not only for the local Catalan community, but also for international movie stars, musicians, and European royalty. The hotel was completed in October 1919 and opened its doors in January 1920, with royal support from King Alfonso XII and Queen Victoria Eugenia, and quickly became the favourite destination to host events for royalty and prominent guests.

The hotel has always had a strong association with fashion. In the 1940s. The Hall, with its grand and opulent setting, hosted numerous fashion shows from Pertegaz and Bastida to modern designers of the Gaudí Hall. The “Fashion tea” or “Galas de teas” was the most popular in the city for many years. Hollywood stars like Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, Anthony Queen, John Wayne, Sofia Loren, and Woody Allen soon became regular guests. Other renowned guests include Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Ella Fitzgerald, Carolina Herrera, Alexander Fleming, Alfredo Kraus, Josep Pla, Ken Follet, Camilo José Cela, Rafael Alberti, Eduardo Chillida, Forgs and more.

  1. Rooms

El Palace Barcelona’s 120 rooms and suites embody the hotel’s signature neoclassical-inspired, elegant style. The Grand Deluxe and The Classic rooms offer bright interiors with views of the Gran Vía. The Superior Suites offer a living room and bedroom, while the Junior Suites offer views of a quintessential Barcelona courtyard. The Family Rooms have two large bedrooms connected by a private hall.

3.1. Art Suites

Exclusive, original, and unique, the Art Suites were created in 2016 as part of the hotel’s renovations and suite expansion project. Step into one of El Palace’s signature Art Suites inspired by a former prominent guest artist and their artistic preference including painting dance, architecture, literature, sculpture or music and you enter the worlds of Ronnie Wood, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, and Josephine Baker. All Art Suites are identical in size with spectacular marble bathrooms featuring mosaics inspired by Roman baths and views over the Gran Vía and Roger de Llúria.

CÉSAR RITZ ART SUITE

The Cesar Ritz Art Suite is dedicated to the creator of El Palace Barcelona and the hotel’s former namesake.  The visionary Swiss businessman included for the first time in history, a bathroom within a hotel room and replaced wallpaper with paint. Embodying glamour and sophistication, the César Ritz Art Suite does not skimp on details. The luxurious pearl and sand colours throughout the suite are combined with touches of bright red as seen in the refined embroidery and velvet upholstery. Gold, a symbol of nobility, power, and beauty, is present throughout the design with accents in authentic gold leaf. Antique Louis XVI style furniture, lush drapes and opulent fabrics complete an atmosphere in which luxury is present in every detail.

SALVADOR DALÍ ART SUITE

The Salvador Dalí Suite is home to the endless memories of the artist’s various eccentricities. This suite was Dalí’s home in Barcelona where he met with famous models and turned himself into a work of art through his famous performances. El Palace Barcelona is the scene of many of his famous surrealist anecdotes, such as when he took a stuffed white horse up to the suite as a gift for his wife Gala, or the day he was photographed with models in the Roman bath. The Dalí Art Suite has a one-of-a-kind heritage and evokes the sophisticated, prestigious atmosphere of the hotel’s beginnings. Handmade rugs, lovingly-restored antiques, nineteenth-century desks and chairs, fabrics made from seventeenth-century Italian damask patterns, ceiling and wall lamps made as true replicas of the originals, a wonderful main bed with canopy and a chinoiserie-style wardrobe, as well as the authentic Roman bath with mosaics that Salvador Dalí and his wife Gala used, are some of the many signature details which make the Dalí Art Suite a truly special suite, where hours can be spent observing every detail.

JOAN MIRÓ ART SUITE

Joan Miró was one of the most influential artists of twentieth century surrealism. The colour palette in Joan Miró’s work is basic, with the use of primary colours in addition to bronze sculpture which was of great importance and is reflected in his work. The Joan Miró Art Suite has been designed in a warm and bright yellow combined with prominent dark wood features. The Joan Miró Art Suite follows a classic, stately design with Louis XVI style furniture and delicate fabrics. Joan Miró organised many of his meetings and gatherings with other intellectuals during his stay at El Palace Barcelona.

CARLOS RUIZ ZAFÓN ART SUITE

The Carlos Ruiz Zafón Art Suite exudes a distinguished, sophisticated atmosphere, in which tan and sandy shades prevail in contrast with elegant turquoise blue. The suite has been carefully restored and decorated with exquisite Louis XVI style furniture, wing chairs, velvet upholstery with geometric patterns, handmade rugs, and the original Roman bath with mosaics from the hotel’s beginnings. Literature, magic, and elegance intertwine in this suite to offer an unforgettable experience. The Carlos Ruiz Zafón Art Suite features many design details inspired by literature and his personality – the most noteworthy being the wonderful bookcase housing all of the works of this famous writer.

EL PALACE SUITE BY JOSÉPHINE BAKER

El Palace Barcelona was Josephine Baker’s home whenever she would visit Barcelona. The star of Charleston, jazz and the big screen unleashed great excitement in the city every time she performed in the hotel’s Grill Room. The El Palace Suite by Josephine Baker has a feminine atmosphere inspired by the artist’s beautiful château. The main colours include pastel tones in the living room and faint red in the bedrooms, combined with Louis XVI style furniture, floral fabrics, and silks. An original Louis XVI table presides over the living room, while the lamps and wall sconces have been faithfully reproduced from the original models.

El PALACE SUITE BY RONNIE WOOD

The El Palace Suite by Ronnie Wood is one of El Palace Barcelona’s six signature Art Suites and has been designed by Ronnie Wood in his preferred Art Deco style, embracing geometric shapes and straight, compact lines. The suite features rich ebony, maple, and rosewood furniture as well as antique art deco pieces. An original, restored jukebox presides over the main lounge with a full collection of discs by the Rolling Stone, exclusive to guests staying in this Signature Suite. Ronnie Wood chose his favourite colour, purple to be a key design detail in the suite, blended with silver, and silver leaf finish. Staying in this suite brings you one step closer to this great artist and rock legend.

A long-time guest of El Palace Barcelona, the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist, has been known to surprise guests of the hotel with impromptu ‘jam sessions’ in Bluesman Cocktail Bar.

3.1. Butler Service

El Palace Barcelona enhances its five-star commitment to excellence with a personalised butler service for suite guests. From pre-arrival to post-departure, the butler is the guest’s dedicated contact – arranging travel, preferences, in-room details, and experiences like dining, shopping, or city outings. Services include unpacking, garment care, in-room drinks, and curated amenities. Even after check-out, the butler follows up, manages feedback and ensures a seamless and tailored experience.

  1. Gastronomy

Deeply rooted in Basque tradition, Executive Chef, Jesús Caballero’s exceptional technique enhances the natural flavors of classic, local, and seasonal ingredients to create signature dishes that are deceivingly simple versions of Basque classics, pure in flavor, and contemporary and elegant in presentation. Caballero celebrates his love and passion for Basque gastronomy as well as for Catalan cuisine, fusing the renowned and iconic Basque and Catalan culinary styles.

4.1 Breakfast in the Jardín

Breakfast is served daily from 07:30 – 11:00 in El Palace Barcelona’s striking black, white, and green Jardín, located on the ground floor. With both indoor and outdoor dining options, the Jardín is a perfect place to kick-start your day with its extensive breakfast assortment of croissants, sweet buns, cakes, cereals, bread, and healthy breakfast options, as well as the traditional Iberian breakfast and international choices. The Jardín’s wrought iron touches are offset by the verdant beauty of the plants that line the walls of the room. The stone fountain in the centre sets the tone, which instils a sense of peace and a true escape from the surrounding busy city.

4.2 All-Day Dining in the Great Hall

Following an extensive renovation, the Great Hall has been restored as the soul of the hotel, where grand and historic architecture meets contemporary design and a new rotating art gallery to support both established and emerging artists.

The new all-day dining menu offers guests a selection of traditional tapas and seasonal, locally sourced dishes that are perfect to share as a snack or combined to make a heartier meal for a casual lunch or dinner. Lighter dishes include squid croquettes with black squid ink, El Palace Patatas Bravas, 100% Iberian ham, coca bread with tomatoes, and an assortment of local artisanal cheeses. Signature main dishes include roasted pumpkin soup with marinated tofu, sautéed seasonal mushrooms, and black garlic, Sirloin beef carpaccio served with a vitello tonnato sauce, Paccheri pasta stuffed with lobster and served with a creamy seafood sauce, burrata served with a Sicilian vinaigrette, as well as slow-cooked lamb tagine with smoked aubergine, kalamata olives, and confit lemon. A selection of sandwiches will also be available, including the El Palace lobster roll and aged beef burger served on a brioche bun with French fries, and the El Palace Classic Chicken Club Sandwich.

4.3 AMAR Barcelona

AMAR Barcelona opened its doors in Spring 2022 in partnership with renowned chef, Rafa Zafra, the former El Bulli Chef who also heads up the much talked-about restaurant, Heart Ibiza for the Adrià brothers. Amar Barcelona embodies the love and passion which El Palace Barcelona and Rafa Zafra have for Barcelona, the Mediterranean Sea, Catalan culture, the local seafood, and gastronomy. Dishes are an homage to Mediterranean culture, with delicious sea products like oysters, caviar, and other seafood, along with a selection of classic Catalan dishes. Signature Mediterranean starters include Langoustine Carpaccio, Spider Crab Salad with Romesco Sauce and Tarragon Jelly, as well as the restaurant’s signature Seafood Platter with fresh oysters, clams, prawns, scallops, mussels, sea urchin, crawfish, and king crab.

The inspiration for the restaurant’s interior design by Eva Pous and Elena Prats Rubies comes from the hotel’s ethos, in which history and modernity evolve in parallel, giving rise to interesting dialogues between the heritage of the building and the dynamism of a modern space celebrated for its creativity of the past and present. The interiors feature elegant blue and gold tones complemented by ionic columns dating back to the opening of the hotel in 1919 and which have been restored in black and gold to evoke luxurious and palatial settings. The space has been created with careful consideration given to colour and light, from the gold representing the sky, to the blue representing the sea together creating a warm, welcoming, and enveloping environment. Two original teardrop crystal chandeliers juxtapose with minimalist architectural luminaires to create a strong visual dialogue of contrasts. The focal point of the restaurant is a rectangular gold bar flanked by luxurious velvet blue and gold-accented chairs and wood and brass accents. The original gold mouldings and original decorative elements have been carefully restored.

4.4 Rooftop Garden

Inspired by the romantic garden of Francesc Cambó’s palace, as well as the paintings of the modernist painter Ramon Casas, the Rooftop Garden is an oasis in the heart of vibrant Barcelona with panoramic views over the city.

An elegant pergola decorated with tropical plants inspired by the greenhouse of the Ciutadella Park, takes centre stage along with orchids to create a magical setting for a relaxed drink or bite to eat during the summer months. A second pergola, known as the Pergola Sagrada Familia, allows guests to absorb the smell of orange blossoms and jasmine as they stroll to the sculpture of Diana. A telescope allows guests to observe Gaudí’s well-known artwork from the privacy of the roof terrace. At the opposite end of the terrace is the hotel’s pool inspired by the hotel’s ancient Roman baths. From the pool area, you can access the solarium, the highest point of El Palace Barcelona. An almost secret spot, with stunning 360 views, the Solarium is the best place to watch Barcelona’s spectacular sunsets.

In the summer months, the Rooftop Garden hosts the hotel’s famous Summer Rooftop Cinema, Brunch & Vinyls, Rooftop Yoga in partnership with Frizzant, live Rumba Thursdays, as well as Art + Drinks workshops, which take place at 7pm on alternate Wednesdays in partnership with illustrator, Joel Miñana, where guests learn the careful art of mixology by creating two of the hotel’s famed signature cocktails while Miñana guides participants in a creative session of how to master the stroke of artful illustrations. Cocktails are prepared using a variety of different drinks from Bacardi Spain’s portfolio. (Note: From September – April, Art + Drinks moves to the Great Hall.)

In the Autumn, the Sagrada Familia Pergola is lined with beautiful fragrant orange flower blossoms, vine leaves, and thousands of white fairy lights, and is transformed into an urban vineyard to celebrate Las Vendimias, the annual harvest, with a traditional harvest dining experience.

In the Winter, a magical winter wonderland descends on the Rooftop Garden with a full programme for the festive season, including Barcelona’s first open-air Christmas Cinema, a Christmas Market featuring local artisans, as well as immersive dining experiences which transport guests to the Alps.

Noble woods, sumptuous velvets, and amber tones envelop this vintage English-style cocktail bar with original distillates of the 1920s.

Bluesman Cocktail Bar takes its name from the painting that Ronnie Wood, the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist, painted himself and gifted to the hotel after one of his long stays at El Palace Barcelona. During his time in residence, Wood was known for performing impromptu jam sessions in Bluesman Cocktail Bar, and he wanted the painting to be hung in the space where he spent such memorable evenings.

Crystal chandeliers dating back to the 1920s hang over a fine black and white marble bar which showcases of selection of unique spirits and vintage antiques still in use today. At the back of the bar, a mirror hides a spectacular disco ball that shines brightly during the performances that take place on Friday and Saturday nights. Jazz, blues, and soul are the protagonists of this creative space with musical bands and artists performing live on the stage located next to the bar on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

With more than four hundred spirits and liqueurs, cocktails are a true art form at Bluesman Cocktail Bar where cocktails are masterpieces in themselves.
