His Excellency Mr Jassem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), said that Their Majesties and Highnesses the leaders of the Cooperation Council countries pay great attention to health and that the indicators of the GCC countries in this field confirm their commitment to health development issues.
HE the Secretary General further said that this was represented by the ability of the GCC countries to achieve some of the objectives of the third goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs), which aspires to ensure health and well-being for all.
This came during the ninth meeting of Their Excellencies the GCC Ministers of Health held on Sunday (October 1, 2023) in the Omani capital, Muscat.
The meeting was headed by His Excellency Dr Hilal bin Ali bin Hilal Al Sabti, Minister of Health of the Sultanate of Oman, Chairman of the current session, and with the participation of Their Excellencies the Ministers of Health in the GCC countries.
At the beginning of the meeting, HE the Secretary General extended to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, Sultan of Oman and Chairman of the current session of the Supreme Council of the GCC, the highest expressions of gratitude and appreciation, and to Their Majesties and Highnesses the leaders of the Cooperation Council countries for the generous support and care to the joint Gulf action process, in order to
advance it in all areas and fields of health, praying to Allah the Almighty to bless the GCC countries and peoples with security, peace and prosperity.
During his speech, His Excellency stressed that the GCC countries were able to limit the spread of infectious diseases such as polio, malaria, and other communicable diseases that threaten the lives of the population through national programmes for expanded immunisation, and other measures that limit the outbreak and spread of these diseases. He also asserted the GCC countries’ endeavours to achieve comprehensive health coverage by providing health and human resources to the health systems, enabling the population to access health services across its various levels.
During the meeting, several topics on the agenda were discussed, most notably the decisions of the esteemed Supreme Council in the health field, the action plan of the Committee of Their Excellencies the Ministers of Health of the GCC States (2022-2026), the follow-up of the implementation of the International Health Regulations (2005), and other related topics of common interest. The outputs of the technical committees working in the health field were also reviewed, and the proposals of the GCC countries aimed at developing and advancing Gulf health work were discussed.
