During High-Level General Debate Opening, HE GCCSG: UNGA Serves as Vital Forum to Bridge Perspectives, Forge Consensus on Global Issues and Challenges, and Anchor Multilateral Diplomacy

His Excellency Mr Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), affirmed that the convening of the High-Level General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)—bringing together world leaders and heads of state—constitutes a vital international platform to bridge perspectives, build consensus, and unlock broader horizons for collective action to address the issues and challenges confronting the global community.

His Excellency’s remarks were delivered during his attendance at the opening of the High-Level General Debate, in the presence of numerous heads of state, prime ministers, and senior international dignitaries, on Tuesday (22 September 2026), held on the margins of the 81st session of the UNGA in New York, United States of America.

“The current era, marked by rapid transformations and compounding complexities, places a heightened responsibility upon the international community to prioritise diplomacy and constructive engagement,” His Excellency said,  stressing the imperative of cultivating common ground to resolve disputes and de-escalate crises through peaceful means, strictly aligned with the principles of the UN Charter and the provisions of international law. “Multilateral diplomacy remains the fundamental framework through which regional and worldwide challenges must be addressed,” His Excellency underlined.

Moreover, His Excellency explained that GCC member states approach regional and international issues guided by an enduring doctrine rooted in mutual respect for national sovereignty and political independence, strict adherence to non-interference in internal affairs, and reliance on negotiated settlements.

“This posture stems from the firm conviction that sustainable security and stability can only be realised through joint responsibility, cooperative frameworks, and adherence to international legitimacy,” His Excellency pointed out.

Concluding his statement, His Excellency the GCC Secretary General noted that the active participation of GCC nations in the General Assembly proceedings and concurrent high-level summits provides an invaluable forum to exchange views with global partners and broaden understanding on files of mutual interest, thereby advancing shared priorities and bolstering pathways toward peace, stability, sustainable development, and lasting prosperity regionally and globally.
