HE GCCSG: The GCC’s Support for Shaikha Al Nowais’s Candidacy for UN Tourism Secretary General is Natural Extension of the GCC’s Active International Presence & the Ability of Gulf Talent to Contribute to Developing Global Tourism Ecosystem

His Excellency Mr Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), affirmed that the support and endorsement of the GCC states for the candidacy of Her Excellency Shaikha Al Nowais for the post of Secretary General of United Nations (UN)Tourism for the 2026–2029 term represents a natural extension of the GCC states’ active presence in international forums.
He stated it also reflects the ability of Gulf competencies to contribute to the development of the global tourism system. His Excellency also pointed out that this nomination embodies the GCC states’ approach to empowering women and providing them with opportunities to assume leadership positions at regional and international levels.
These remarks came during the extraordinary meeting of the Committee of Their Highnesses and Excellencies the Ministers responsible for tourism, held to support the candidacy of Her Excellency Shaikha Al Nowais from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the post of UN Tourism Secretary General, today, Thursday, October 30, 2025 (via video conference).
“The Gulf tourism sector has become one of the important pillars in the sustainable development framework of the GCC states, and a supporting axis for the path of economic, social, and cultural integration among member states.” His Excellency said during his speech in the meeting.
Moreover, His Excellency noted that the GCC states view tourism as a bridge for enhancing human convergence and building bridges of communication between peoples, in addition to its role in strengthening the common Gulf identity.
He stressed the importance of unifying efforts, exchanging expertise, and developing joint tourism policies to keep pace with regional and global transformations in this vital sector.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the UN Tourism Regional Office in Riyadh reflects the region’s prominent position on the global tourism landscape. This affirms the leading capabilities and the institutional and human resources possessed by the GCC states, which contribute to enhancing their international presence in the tourism industry.” His Excellency explained.
At the conclusion of his speech, His Excellency Mr Albudaiwi extended his sincerest thanks and appreciation to Their Excellencies the Ministers for their sincere efforts, praying to Allah the Almighty for success in fostering a promising Gulf tourism future that meets the aspirations of the GCC states and their peoples.
