ICD BROOKFIELD PLACE UNVEILS STRATEGIC ROADMAP TO NET ZERO CARBON

nabdalhadath – Ahmed Bin Abdulqader
ICD Brookfield Place has announced the release of its Net Zero Carbon Pathway Report, a detailed framework that sets the landmark address on course to achieve net zero operational carbon emissions by 2030. The plan reinforces the complex’s alignment with the UAE’s national climate goals and the Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.
ICD Brookfield Place first declared its intent to pursue net zero carbon in July 2022, joining the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment. The initiative focuses on eliminating Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, while also advocating for broader reductions in Scope 3 emissions across its value chain. This ambition is underpinned by Brookfield Asset Management’s global sustainability guiding principles.
“ICD Brookfield Place is committed to redefining what sustainable real estate can achieve in the region. This isn’t just about meeting targets—it’s about raising the bar through innovation and action,” said Rob Devereux, CEO of Brookfield Properties.
Pathway Milestones:
- Science- Aligned Emission Targets: Aims for a 3.3% annual reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, reaching a 23.3% cumulative decrease by 2030.
- Proven Results: No-cost energy optimisation measures implemented in 2024 led to a 16% drop in district cooling demand and a 7% reduction in electricity consumption.
- Carbon Impact: Efficiency gains in 2024 have avoided 463 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to nearly 5% reduction from the scope 2 emissions baseline.
- Tenant Collaboration: 92% of tenants engaged in Phase 1 of ICD Brookfield Place’s sustainability programme, with nearly half already adopting independent net zero targets.
The pathway outlines a comprehensive approach to decarbonisation through three integrated pillars:
- Energy Efficiency: Utilising a digital twin Building Energy Performance Model to analyse consumption patterns, implementing ASHRAE Level II Energy Audit recommendations, and optimizing operations with data-driven insights.
- Renewable Energy Transition: Exploring both on-site solar installations and off-site procurement through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs).
- Value Chain Decarbonisation: Addressing Scope 3 emissions through the tenant engagement programme, sustainable procurement policies with performance tracking, and advanced waste management systems promoting circular principles.
These efforts are supported by a robust governance structure integrating sustainability across all organizational levels, innovative building management technologies, and strategic partnerships with industry stakeholders.
