Message to Every Doctor

Since the earliest ancient times, the doctor has held a place in societies due to their human ability, endowed by God, to alleviate people’s suffering. As ages progressed, so did the scientific advancement of medicine and the technologies used, reaching the point of utilizing artificial intelligence. People relied on treatment through medicinal herbs, what is now known as alternative medicine. In our current era, medicine has evolved, and drugs are produced through chemical reactions. Surgical operations are conducted using modern devices and technologies. Thousands of medical research and studies have been conducted to treat both intractable and non-intractable cases. Thousands of doctors have mastered their work and excelled in medicine, all of which are God’s blessings on humanity. These advancements have reduced the spread of diseases and deaths and alleviated suffering. In the past, people lost their lives to simple diseases due to the lack of medicine and skilled healers.

Our message to that doctor who devoted himself to serving needy patients, striving to alleviate their harm, and becoming, after God’s guidance, a balm for their wounds and a cure for their diseases, I say: be gentle with the patients. A person might endure hunger, lack of knowledge, or the absence of life’s luxuries, but cannot bear the loss of health. Illness disrupts their rest, weakens their body, and may lead to loss of hope. Disease is a universal human decree, and illnesses and pains vary. God Almighty uses medicine and doctors to lessen people’s suffering on this earth. Along with medicine, a patient needs psychological motivation through kind words, which are a form of charity, as the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said. Humans are naturally inclined to love life, cling to it, struggle for it, and populate the earth, as part of God’s universal laws. When hardship strikes and intensifies, they wish to hear medical and comforting words from the healer and their loved ones to boost their spirits. The psychological factor greatly affects the stability of the condition. We should not bury people alive; our message with patients should be noble, raising their optimism and faith that God is capable of everything. God’s will is above all knowledge and will. We should not discourage patients or convey to them that their condition has worsened and may lead to dire consequences, as this affects the weak and reflects on them and their families. The humanitarian message, the smile, optimism, gentleness, and reassurance must be present when speaking with a patient. God Almighty did not create humans to make them miserable. Some are tested for a wisdom known to God, and many are healed by Him. How many sick people have lived for years, despite being told their lives would be short. Life and death are in God’s hands. God Almighty says, “No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.”

A bedridden patient, weakened and overtaken by illness, becomes like a child needing care, gentleness, a hand on their head, feeling tenderness and security, understanding their feelings, and providing service, surrounded by loved ones. They need to be reminded of God and inspired by stories of people who were afflicted but healed by God. They seek kindness and affection, becoming the focus of attention. They may experience sadness and incapacity, but they strengthen and become invigorated by those around them, especially when their hope and inspiration are lifted. They need someone to listen to their complaints and bring peace to their hearts. We pray to God for the healing of our sick and the sick of Muslims and for their reward. To every patient tested by God with illness, be patient, for with hardship comes ease. Illness is a divine universal decree; do not despair or lose hope in God’s mercy. God’s relief is coming, so attach your heart to Him and use the strong, impactful, and compassionate weapon of supplication. You will praise the outcome.
